Sustainability Promises Break at the Spreadsheet

A water-use measurement specimen that keeps units, baseline and evidence separate from sustainability claims.

Practical software guides

A sustainability report needs a defined measure and reliable evidence. A task labelled complete cannot establish that water use, waste or emissions improved.

Synthetic water-use reporting example
FieldPurpose
MeasureLitres consumed; defined meter and period
SourceMeter reading with date and verification
DenominatorOccupied room-nights, if the comparison uses them
ContextLeak, meter replacement and occupancy change
ClaimApproved wording supported by the calculation and its limits

If a meter is replaced halfway through the period, document the adjustment instead of comparing raw readings as though the series were continuous. Keep missing observations visible. A dashboard must distinguish measured, estimated and unavailable values.

Use a qualified sustainability or utility specialist to select the method and any reporting standard. The specimen is a data-quality exercise, not an environmental certification or proof of savings. An existing metering/reporting tool may be sufficient; custom software should solve a specific collection or verification gap.
